Can I see a chiropractor while pregnant?
If you’ve been dealing with back pain, pelvic girdle aches, or that relentless sciatic twinge that stops you at your feet, you’ve probably wondered whether a chiropractor could help. The good news is that for most healthy pregnancies, yes we can!
Here’s what you need to know.
Is it safe?
For a low-risk pregnancy, chiropractic care is generally considered safe at any stage. At my sports chiropractic clinic we work with pregnant women using gentler techniques and adjusted positioning so there’s no pressure on your belly. The American Pregnancy Association lists no known contraindications for chiropractic care during uncomplicated pregnancies. [1]
That said, if you have placenta previa, unexplained bleeding, a risk of preterm labour, or any other complications, check with your midwife or OB first before booking anything.
What can it help with?
Quite a lot, honestly. Lower back pain and sciatica are the big ones, but many women also find relief from pelvic girdle pain, round ligament discomfort, tight hips, and neck and shoulder tension that builds as your posture shifts with your growing bump. Research shows that between 50 and 70 percent of pregnant women experience back pain at some point, making it one of the most common complaints during pregnancy. [2] A 2006 case series also found chiropractic care significantly reduced low back pain in pregnant patients. [3]
What does a session look like?
A good prenatal chiropractor will go through your history properly before touching anything. Sessions during pregnancy are gentler than standard adjustments, and our clinic is equipped with a cushion so you can lie comfortably facing down.
How often should I go?
That really depends on what you’re dealing with and how your body responds. Some women come in once a month as a kind of maintenance, others more frequently if they’re managing ongoing pain. We’ll give you a clear treatment plan with goals so you always know where you’re at.
As always, this is general information only. Chat to your healthcare provider before starting any new treatment during pregnancy.
