Injured at work? Here’s what to do
Have you been injured at work?
It can be scary, but this blog is to help guide you what to do!
Workplace injuries occur quite often and can have a significant impact on your life, in addition to the physical discomfort and pain there can be a lasting impact on an individual’s mental well-being. In this blog post, I will highlight what work cover is, and the difference between private patient care and work cover care as related to the invaluable contribution of allied healthcare professionals in the recovery, rehabilitation and successful return to work.
What are the goals of Workcover care:
Goals:
1) Protecting workers physically and financially by providing compensation for work-related injuries.
2) Have a support team that includes their nominated doctor, allied health practitioner, workplace rehabilitation provider and the insurer.
3) Timely and appropriate medical and allied health treatments, rehabilitation support and financial assistance during the recovery process.
4) Reduce risk of recurrence and assist the individual in a smooth transition from injury management to return to work.
The Role of Allied Healthcare Professionals in Work Cover Cases:
The allied healthcare professional plays an integral part in the work cover support team. We bring our expertise and specialised knowledge to assist and support the injured work through their recovery journey. Some of the key roles we take on are:
Assessment and Treatment:
Allied healthcare professionals consist of practitioners from varying backgrounds with differing specialities. Some of which include chiropractors, osteopaths, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and psychologists. Regardless of the specific practitioner all will conduct a comprehensive assessment to evaluate the effects of injuries to an individual’s capacity to work. They will develop an individualised plan to address the factors that are causing pain and discomfort and ensure the most effective and efficient rehabilitation process.
Rehabilitation and Function:
Allied healthcare professionals can use various modalities and interventions to assist the rehabilitation and improve patient function. Chiropractors aim to reduce discomfort and pain, improve mobility and increase strength and endurance. Occupational therapists will often focus on enhancing the patient’s ability to perform daily workplace tasks .
Education and Prevention:
Allied healthcare professionals play a critical role in educating both the patient and the employer on safe work practices and identifying workplace hazards. We work closely with the medical team to provide guidance and promote preventative measures that reduce the risk of recurrence and develop self confidence.
