Massage Therapy vs Remedial Massage Therapy
Hey guys. Recently, I’ve been getting questions about what Remedial Massage Therapy is and how it’s different from other forms of therapy. In this blog, I will be covering what the main differences are between ‘Massage Therapy’ and ‘Remedial Massage Therapy’.
What is Remedial Massage Therapy?
Remedial Massage Therapy is considered a complementary therapy, focused on alleviating symptoms through the use of hands-on techniques on the soft tissue structures of the body. Remedial Massage Therapy can be shown in many forms, such as Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Sports Massage, Dry Needling, Cupping, or Dry Needling. In order to become a Remedial Massage Therapy, a Diploma is achieved through a recognized training organization (RTO) such as TAFE before treatment can be provided.
What’s the difference between Massage Therapy and Remedial Massage Therapy?
Although both forms sound similar, the approach, goal and methodology used by each are different.
Massage Therapy
The term ‘Massage Therapy’ is often more associated with a service focused on improving the overall health and well-being of the person interested. Massage Therapy techniques will often involve movements that are slow and broad, which is often accompanied with a oil. These techniques have a goal of inducing a sense of relaxation and calmness, to allow you to momentarily ‘escape’ the daily stressors of life. If you’re constantly feeling a stressed or overly stimulated in a negative way, Massage Therapy will recommended for you.
Remedial Massage Therapy
On the other hand, Remedial Massage Therapy is focused towards alleviating a specific problem found in the body. Often shown as muscle pain, stiffness, injury or all-general discomforts in daily activities, Remedial Massage Therapy is aimed to help reduce the symptoms associated. Common conditions that Remedial Massage Therapy can help with are lower back pain, headaches & migraines, sprains or strains, or poor posture. In Remedial Massage Therapy, a detailed assessment is conducted to develop and understanding of the current condition of the person interested, before treatment. Techniques used in Remedial Massage Therapy can be strong and specific, often eliciting a sense of pain or discomfort when pressure is applied. After applying pressure, symptoms such as pain or stiffness are usually reduced, allowing for more freedom in movements. Firm pressure can be applied on areas with muscle, ligaments or tendons. If you’re experiencing a loss of function in your daily movements or activities, Remedial Massage Therapy is recommended.
What should I choose?
If you’re asking yourself what you should choose, consider the following. If you are looking for a way to relax and forget about the daily stressors of life, Massage Therapy is the way to go. If you’re dealing with a specific problem that’s been stopping you from being at your best, Remedial Massage Therapy is recommended. It should be stated, that every therapist operates in a different manner, so find the right therapist to help you with your needs and wants can take some time.
